Wooo a bank holiday week! Gotta take ’em while ya got ’em! Actually, the week started off gently before melting into a manic, chaotic and perhaps a tad silly (Jägerbombs at 2am at your hotel on a multiday beer festival? Kids: just say no) extended weekend. Though I did miss the work summer BBQ (whole stuffed lamb! On-a-spit! Make that a pair of baa-baas!) it was probably both hilarious and less messy than it sounds.
Perhaps to build up in the roast lamb (that eventually was not, in retrospect) I instinctively avoided poultry and red meat as the main protein and opted for salmon. And I even managed a proper vegetarian day (double woo!).
September 1
I’m conserving the umeboshi as there’s not many left, but these seaweed based rice balls were pretty good. Lunch is french beans & carrot kimpira, yellow zucchini namul, shiozake, pickled runner beans and 2 onigiri (hijiki with shiso & sesame and wakame with sesame & spring onion)
September 2
More salmon today.. Lunch is french beans kimpira, yellow zucchini namul, ginger stir fried carrot, miso marinated salmon, tomato and dill pickled veg.
The salmon was surprisingly not too salty and seemed to be sweet like the affects of shiokoji. Not bad; definitely worth repeating
September 3
It’s all veggie today as I had time to knock up the spring rolls from scratch (the things I do for beer). Now if only nobody notices I’m asleep at my desk… Lunch is carrots kimpira, french bean goma-ae, tomato, veggie spring rolls (red cabbage, red onion and zucchini), dill pickled cauliflower, runner beans and radishes
September 4
Before hopping off “Op Norf”, the last of the marinated salmon. Twas better warm; too salty cold! Lunch is a tomato, miso marinated salmon, veggie garlic stir fry, butter zucchini and a medley of dill pickles (runner beans, cauliflower, cucumber and radishes)
