The long weekend was a welcome relief from the full-on pace around here; though during the bustle Yvan’s phone met an unfortunate accident so I had loaned him mine since it’s a fundamental part of his work arsenal. Hence this week was courtesy of the handy, reliable and somewhat neglected digital camera – and though a small change was required in better-organized mornings to take them (I still cook the majority, if not all my lunches the night before) I would still rather take my pictures just before I eat it (so it will show “in-transit damage” and “squashed food” befitting a real lunch.. and I’m lazy).
The short week opened up to a special treat – pulled pork, though the night it was cooked we had a sample of it as roast pork with the perfectly crispy rind (reason 183 on why I am not shifting weight). To make it easier to pack in a lunch I thought of shumai and gyoza – but had to make do with home-made wrappers, which weren’t too bad but were definitely more work. Though it’s just flour, water and salt it’s the kneading, waiting and rolling that I’d rather get store-bought.
The local farm shop is still turning out asparagus so I’m appreciating it now since it’s got a fairly short season.

Aaand I’m back from public holiday Monday minus my phone – this is temporary so this post is courtesy of an actual digital camera (taken the pic in the morning for a change) and the web interface. Lunch is spicy zucchini, roast eggplant salad*, pulled pork shumai using homemade wrappers, tomatoes and crabstick four-seas makizushi with shiso furikake.
** Not-quite ensaladang talong since I’m not allowed to bring bagoong home, but I did use fish sauce

It’s another morning photo; I’m still camera-phoneless and it feels a bit like cheating since I’m not taking them just before digging in. Today I was surprised I had things to fill my bento: mini meatball burgers, spicy eggplant, steamed carrots, roasted eggplant salad, steamed asparagus, pulled-pork gyoza* and tomato.
* an excuse to use the garlic chives for once, though the home-made wrappers were a pain!

Feeling a bit tired; a day like this I wish I didn’t practice self-restraint on the protein and carbs and instead swapped out some of that steamed veg.. Lunch is steamed baby carrot, cucumber & wakame salad, steamed asparagus, tomato and “cheater’s” bulgogi
(And still phoneless.. bah!)

If all else fails, make bibimbap – you won’t regret it! Upped the volume of rice for this because it’s just too good.. Lunch bibimbap has steamed carrot with lemon, Korean-style chilli minced beef, stir fried red cabbage and spring onion, steamed asparagus, quick-adobofied eggplant and a soft boiled egg.
Still no phone, so no ‘bowl’ shot today 🙁
